Waste To Energy Plant Operational in Okhla Delhi by July

In India management of waste has become the biggest problem with the rise in population. Most of the big cities are severely affected by this problem, specially Metro cities, New Delhi is one of them. MCD has now become the largest civic body catering to 18 million people, which is 91 % of the entire population. Earlier,Tokya was the largest.
Taking this waste management  problem  in concern, New Delhi is now ready to get its  first waste-to-energy plant in Okhla. This plant would be operational by July 2011. There is urgent need to treat waste in a segregated manner. Delhi alone produces more than 9000 Metric tone waste.
Residents of Okhla were apprehensive because there is already an open compost plant in the area. which causes noise pollution and generate odour. But they have been assured that this project works on a technology that has never been used before. The proposed Rs 200 crore plant will generate 16 MW of power from 1,350 metric tonne solid waste. However, still this project is opposed by local residents and environmental activists who claim the project will increase the overall pollution level.
JITF Ecopolis firm is doing this project. According to them trucks will bring the raw material in an enclosed area from where no noise 'will go outside. The bad air will in fact be used for heating process.
